About Us
The Carlat CME Institute is dedicated to encouraging unbiased and high quality medical education. We believe that the vast majority of medical education should be funded without support from drug or device companies. Over the past couple of decades, any physicians have become addicted to pharmaceutical industry perks, including lucrative promotional speaking contracts, marketing consulting jobs, and free CME. But industry-sponsored education is never actually “free”–it comes at the cost of subtle promotional agendas that make their way into classes, despite all the regulations of the ACCME (the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education). We believe it is time for doctors to take control of their education away from drug and medical device companies.
Our History:
The Carlat CME Institute is a subsidiary of Carlat Publishing, LLC. Carlat Publishing was founded in 2002 by Daniel Carlat in order to publish an unbiased CME newsletter for psychiatrists, The Carlat Psychiatry Report. Before the first issue was published in January of 2003, Dr. Carlat had resigned from drug company speaker’s panels, because he realized that he was being paid to market specific drugs, rather than to deliver medical education. In 2010, Carlat Publishing added a second CME newsletter to its portfolio–The Carlat Child Psychiatry Report, edited by Caroline Fisher, MD and in January 2012, the company added a third newsletter — The Carlat Behavioral Health Report.
In March 2012, Dr. Carlat took on a new role as the director of the Pew Prescription Project (www.prescriptionproject.org) in Washington, DC. While Dr. Carlat maintains ownership of Carlat Publishing, he has hired a new CEO and other staff to take over management and editorial responsibilities at the company during his tenure at Pew. Carlat Publishing is in a blind trust to prevent any perceived conflicts of interest between Dr. Carlat’s roles at Pew and ownership of the company.
